Innokin Jem Pen Review

The Innokin Jem Pen is a new pen style AIO device from Innokin. Designed for mouth to lung vaping, it’s aimed especially at smokers looking to make the switch to vaping. It should also be ideal for anyone looking for a simple, slim MTL set up for daily use.  At first glance the Jem Pen seems a bit of a step backwards with all the modern pod systems around, but maybe we’ve forgotten how good a simple pen-device AIO can be. It comes in 6 different colours and is very competitively priced.

Build Quality and Specifications

Inside the box we get the Jen Pen, a 1.6 ohm Kanthal and cotton coil and a 2.0 ohm ceramic coil. A decent quality, but short, USB cable for charging and a bag of spare O-rings and seals. Innokin also include a quick start guide and a warning booklet which is good to see. The Jem Pen is very sleek and compact, it’s only 16mm wide and just under 130mm tall. It’s powered by an internal 1000mAh battery, which is a good capacity for this kind of device.

A step up from the pen-types of the past, the Jem Pen has 13 watts of constant output which means you’ll get a consistent vape all day rather than it getting weaker as the battery runs down. The steel construction of the body feels very well made and solid enough to take a knock or two. The fire button is nicely placed and feels comfortable to use. There’s an LED display on the button of the button that lets you know the battery life. It stays green down to 60%, yellow down to 20% and red when the battery is less that 20%. Once it’s red, you’ll definitely need to start charging. Even though it’s a very slim device, the Jem still has an advanced chipset. It provides over-discharge protection, overcharge protection, short circuit protection and overheating protection. All these things will be reassuring for new vapers especially.

Flavour and performance

The Jem Pen doesn’t come with a coil fitted, the coils screw into the top of the battery section then the tank section is pushed into place, then the top is screwed down. It’s a similar set up to the Aspire Pockex but a much smaller device overall. I fitted the 1.6 ohm Kanthal first and I found the flavour excellent for my Dinner Lady 50/50 Lemon Tart. The airflow isn’t adjustable, it’s quite a tight draw and is 100% MTL only. It’s probably perfect for someone who’s just switched from smoking, but it was a little too tight for me, so if you prefer a looser MTL then this might not be for you. The mouthpiece is almost exactly the same size as a cigarette end too, which will help to create a familiar experience for smokers.

Coil and Battery Performance

I took the Jem Pen out with me for a day with the ceramic 2 ohm coil fitted and its performance was brilliant with some 20mg nicotine salt liquid. It’s definitely a step up from many of the cheaper pod-systems and I soon found I got used to the more restricted airflow. It was small and light enough to carry in a shirt pocket too. It uses the common 5 clicks to turn it on and off, but other than that there’s nothing else to worry about, it’s vaping simplicity and it’s all the better for it.

The windows in the tank section are clear and allow you to see the liquid levels perfectly, you’ll see when you need to fill up and won’t be burning out dry coils by accident. The Jem Pen did last me most of the day, but the LED was showing red by about 7pm after a day of fairly heavy use, I don’t think that’s too bad. Charging took a little over an hour connected to my PC’s USB.

Overall Performance and Summary

Overall the Innokin Jem Pen would be an ideal first e-cigarette for someone. You could show them how to use it in 5 minutes and I think they would probably go away and switch to vaping successfully. While it might not be a device I would use daily myself, I know at least 2 people that I think this would be perfect for. One of them has tried vaping before but got frustrated with the kit he bought, the other is a friend who’s still thinking about making the switch. It’s a simple set up but it works perfectly. The vaping experience is exactly what many will love. With a good tobacco and the ceramic coil, it was actually bringing back some old memories. The Jem Pen is an excellent choice, and maybe even the best choice, for those looking for this style of e-cigarette.
