Voopoo Alpha Zip Kit Review

Voopoo Alpha Zip Kit Review

October 10, 2019

The Alpha Zip Kit is a continuation of what we all love about Voopoo. I say this because the Alpha Zip mod is essentially a Drag 2 in different clothes. The Drag 2 is a well-made, great performing mod and the Alpha Zip uses the same Gene Fit circuitry and has a very similar size and shaped case. The Alpha Zip Kit comes with the Voopoo MAAP tank, which should make for an excellent performing and reliable sub-ohm set up for daily use. It comes in five snazzy and unique designs.

Build Quality and Specifications

Inside the box we have the Alpha Zip 180w box mod. It’s a dual 18650 device that has the same Gene Fit chipset as the Drag 2. First impressions are very good. It’s very nicely finished and as long as you like the boxy feel, you’ll be impressed by the overall quality.

The MAAT sub-ohm tank which, in case you were wondering, stands for Middle Adjustable Airflow Tank, is made of stainless steel and measures around 24.5mm wide at the base. It has a wide bore drip tip, a gold plated 510 pin and Pyrex glass. It’s a 2ml tank but can be made to hold more with a bubble glass. There’s 2 coils included in the kit: an MT-M1 coil, which is a 0.13 ohm single mesh coil and a 0.2ohm MT-M2 dual mesh coil. We also have a spare parts bag, and the usual warranty, manual and paperwork.

Output Options and User Interface

If you’ve owned a Drag mod before then you’ll be familiar with the specs of the mod. It has a bright and easy to read monochromatic screen, it’s not fancy but it’s very purposeful. The Alpha Zip also features the ‘FIT’ mode as well as the common, Power, TC and Bypass operation. For those unfamiliar the FIT system is a quick way to adjust your power. FIT 1 ‘Battery Set’ reduces the power to conserve battery life. FIT 2 ‘Flavour Set’ is essentially normal operation while FIT 3 ‘Cloud Set’ increases power for more vapour production.

I felt this was a little gimmicky when I first got my Drag 2 mini but over time I’ve found it quite useful for quickly lowering the power to save battery life. The finish on the mod reminds me a lot of the Drag 2 platinum finish, it’s shiny and seems to be just as hard wearing. I presume it’s some kind of plating over the zinc alloy frame and to me it looks a lot nicer than paint.

Tank and flavour performance

First impressions of the MAAT tank are good. It looks great and the coils are a simple push in design that works a treat. The 0.2ohm coil is rated for 50 to 80 watts and the 0.13ohm for 65 to 85w. So, if you like to vape around 70w you’ll probably be happy with either.

The whole “slots in the middle of the tank” thing is a little lost on me I must admit. I don’t really understand how this affects the draw but I can say that the airflow is very smooth so it does seem to work, I may even go as far as saying it’s the smoothest sub-tank I’ve experienced for quite some time.

The sliding top fill is convenient and there’s a medium fill port to put your bottle nib into, it’s not as big as some so you do need to be a little careful. There’s a little more restriction in the airflow than some of the wide open tanks but personally I prefer that. Another thing the airflow system does is prevent any leaking. There’s not a massive difference between the two coils but I prefer the single mesh just slightly. It was giving me amazing flavour around 65w and plenty of vapour production. It’s a really good mesh tank, and definitely one of the best on the market right now.

Overall Performance and Summary

The Voopoo Alpha Zip Kit is an excellent DTL kit. The mod is a well made and great performing dual 18650 device. Other than its slightly bulky shape, there’s nothing to complain about at all. The maximum power of 180w is a sensible level and way more than you will need for the MAAP tank. It has all common safety features such as reverse battery protection, over charge protection, over temperature protection as well as balanced charging.

Overall I think the build quality is excellent and it feels solid and dependable. It has all the specs that most people would need without being packed with things you’ll never use. The MAAP tank is a stunning performer and I feel it should be Voopoo’s flagship tank. It has super smooth and quiet airflow and when you add that to great flavour and vapour production, it’s a kit that is well worth the asking price.
