Vype ePen3 Review

Vype ePen3 Review

June 28, 2019

The VYPE ePen3 is the third generation product in a range of closed system e-cigarettes. Produced by British American Tobacco and originally introduced to the UK in 2013, the Vype e-cigarette was designed to provide smokers with an easy to use vapour alternative. This latest version is claimed to be a more powerful than the V1, which should offer better vapour production, longer battery life and higher nicotine satisfaction. At first glance it does appear to have more in common with a modern pod system than the e-cigarettes of years past. The company may have come a long way since its early days and the Vype ePen3 looks promising, but is it a good choice for new vapers? Could it find its way into an existing vapers pocket too?

Build quality and specifications

The Vype ePen3 Kit comes with everything you need to get started on your vaping journey. You get the ePen3 device, two pre-filled pods, a micro USB cable for charging and a user guide. It’s all presented nicely in a fairly plain but smart looking box. The device itself has a nice textured feel and is very lightweight, which is a good thing as it’s quite big compared to some of the smallest pod systems on the market. It’s far from big though and you can slip it in a top pocket without any issues. The battery is 650 mAh, which doesn’t sound a lot, but in a device like this it’s actually a fairly large capacity. The ePen3 isn’t an automatic draw device and has a small button to fire the device. To turn it on you just click it 3 times quickly and you do the same to turn it off. The draw is a really good MTL and I think it’s pretty perfect for converting a smoker. The airflow is not too tight or too loose.

Flavour and Pod performance

The pods hold 2ml of liquid and flavour is really, very good. The included tobacco flavour was my favourite and it was a really tasty sweet Virginia type of blend. I may even go as far as saying it’s one of the best tobaccos I’ve tasted, if it was sold in bottles I would absolutely consider buying some for my open devices. The other flavour included in the kit was mint. I don’t really like straight mint flavours, especially when it’s this strong, but I think it’s good that Vype have included it. If you were a smoker 2 hours before picking this up, I suspect you wouldn’t really taste a milder flavour. The pods can’t be refilled, so when it’s empty you just replace it with a whole new pod. The upside of that is your coil and wick inside are always fresh and giving you great performance. Right down to the end of the liquid I was getting the same strong taste and vapour production. The throat hit is quite punchy and I think that is something that would really help transitioning smokers too.

Overall Performance and summary

Battery life was very good compared to some other pods, I had no problem making this last all day. It also charges fully in 2 hours, so if you need to give it a top up charge later in the day, it’s not going to be too much of an issue. Set up and pod replacement is about as easy as it gets, if you’ve never used anything like this before you won’t have an issues. It’s a very friendly device for a new vaper.

As I suspected this kit is clearly aimed at people that are still smoking and I would absolutely recommend this to smokers looking to switch to a less harmful alternative. It has a great MTL draw and is very inexpensive. It costs a fair bit less than two packets of cigarettes and I honestly think this would work very well for most people. As someone who’s been vaping for a number of years the Vype ePen3 really surprised me and I found myself really enjoying using it more each day. The  18mg nicotine is delivered in quite a lot of vapour for a pod, so I found the vape really satisfying. Some days I was going for considerable amounts of time without picking it up. This will probably be my travel vape of choice for a while, it works great on the go and if I lost it or left it somewhere it wouldn’t be a disaster.

For the money I don’t think there’s anything that comes close. It would give many more expensive systems a good run for their money. It feels really nice to use, it’s comfortable to hold, with a nice soft feel and the mouthpiece design incorporated into the pods really works well. Overall it’s a hassle free and powerful little kit that does everything it needs to.
